PRP vs Stem Cells vs Exosomes: What’s the Difference and Which Questions Should You Ask?
Search for regenerative medicine online and you will quickly encounter three terms: PRP, stem cells, and exosomes. They are often grouped together, but biologically they are very different.
Understanding those differences is important before discussing any regenerative or wellness program with a clinician.
PRP: Platelet-Rich Plasma
PRP begins with a person's own blood. The blood is processed to concentrate platelets, which contain signaling proteins involved in normal repair processes.
PRP has been studied extensively in areas such as orthopedics and sports medicine, although effectiveness can vary depending on the condition and protocol.
Stem Cells: Living Cells
Stem cells are living cells with biological properties that differ from platelets and extracellular vesicles.
Different stem-cell sources and preparations can have very different scientific and regulatory implications. That is why “stem cell therapy” is not a precise enough description by itself.
Exosomes: Cell-Derived Communication Vesicles
Exosomes are microscopic extracellular vesicles released by cells. They can carry proteins, lipids, RNA, and other molecular material involved in cell-to-cell communication.
Exosomes are not cells and should not be described as stem cells. Their potential uses remain an active area of research.

Which One Is “Best”?
There is no responsible universal answer.
The appropriate option depends on what you are trying to address, your medical history, the available evidence, regulatory considerations, and the clinician's evaluation.
